A staff composer at Universal, Stein made his name working on a succession of genre movies produced by the studio in the 1950s. He contributed music to films such as Creature From The Black Lagoon (1954), This Island Earth (1955), Tarantula (1955), Istanbul (1957) and The Incredible Shrinking Man (1957).
