Speed was a photographer and filmmaker responsible for pioneering anthropological works, documentaries such as Benin Kingship Rituals (1962) which remain an important record of African cultural history. Other notable films include Were Ni! He Is A Madman (1963), Nigeria: Today and Before Yesterday (1978) and Sons of the Moon (1980).
