A British comedy performer who shone in a variety of roles, Smith came to prominence among the cast of Not The Nine O’Clock News (1979-82). He continued to act in various sketch shows with Griff Rhys Jones, with whom he founded Talkback, and later directed cinema hits including Bean (1997).
