An authoritative naturalist and prolific writer, Simms was a pioneer in the presentation of natural history and made almost 8,000 broadcasts on BBC Radio over 38 years. He joined the BBC Schools TV Service in 1961, and subsequently produced, directed and presented programmes there in tandem with his radio career.
