An experimental filmmaker whose work challenged audiences and critics, Schroeter came to prominence in his native Germany with The Death of Maria Malibran (1971). Never easily pigeonholed, his subsequent films include Willow Springs (1973), The Kingdom of Naples (1978), Palermo Or Wolfsburg (1980), The Rose King (1985) and Malina (1991).
