American screenwriter Schrader made his screen debut with The Yakuza (1975), co-written with his younger brother Paul. Japanese themes loomed large in his canon, although he also worked on Blue Collar (1978), Kiss of the Spider Woman (1985) and Mishima (1985). His sole directorial outing was on Naked Tango (1991).
