Born in Switzerland, film (and opera) director Schmid was a close friend, collaborator and one time lover of German director Rainer Werner Fassbinder. His interest in melodrama and fairy-tale was evident in his work, including the heavily stylised La Paloma (1974), Shadow of Angels (1976) and incest drama Violanta (1977).
