A rugged performer in a string of popular movies, Scheider came to prominence in Klute (1971) and The French Connection (1971), scoring his biggest hit with Jaws (1975). Thereafter he was a dependable presence in movies such as Marathon Man (1976) and shone in the atypical All That Jazz (1979).
