Creator of a roster of childhood favourites, Ryan developed Captain Pugwash in 1950 for a strip in The Eagle comic. He later brought the character to life in popular animated series from 1957 to 1966 and 1974-75. His other series include Mary, Mungo and Midge (1969) and Sir Prancelot (1972).
