Czech-born but naturalised Canadian, Rubes came to international notice as Amish patriarch Eli Lapp in Witness (1985). His other films include Dead of Winter (1987), Something About Love (1988), Courage Mountain (1990) and Snow Falling on Cedars (1999). He also appeared in television series such as Due South (1997-99).
