Although theatre was his first love, Purchase had a presence in films and television, with one popular portrayal coming opposite Tom Baker in the Doctor Who story The Pirate Planet (1978). Other screen credits include The First Churchills (1969), I, Claudius (1976) and Ian McKellen’s film of Richard III (1996).
