A BBC executive with a strong journalistic background, Protheroe made his name in his native Wales before rising through the Corporation’s ranks in London. He served in various roles, becoming Assistant Director of News and Current Affairs in 1977 and, from 1982 to 1987, Assistant Director General to Alasdair Milne.
