A Japanese filmmaker who challenged the status quo and pushed back boundaries with his work, Oshima directed the controversial, heavily censored tale of sexual obsession Ai No Corrida/In The Realm of the Senses (1976), the Anglo-Japanese wartime tale Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence (1983) and surreal romance Max Mon Amour (1986).
