A former contract player at Paramount, Murphy began to gain attention when she left the studio, quickly winning her highest profile role opposite Marlon Brando in The Wild One (1953). Subsequent roles came in films such as Beachhead (1954), Sitting Bull (1954), The Desperate Hours (1955) and Junior Bonner (1972).
