Having grown up under Soviet rule Russian born Motyl was well used to the vagaries of official sanction and opprobrium yet despite this enjoyed commercial success with White Sun of the Desert (1969). His other films include Deti Pamira (1963), Zhenya, Zenechka i Katyusha (1967) and Zvezda plentilnogo Schastya (1975).
