Credited with making Amitabh Bachchan a star, Mehra cast him as a ruthless cop in Zanjeer (1973). After the comedic Hera Pheri (1973), the pair made six further films together. Mehra directed several other movies, including the musical Haseean Man Jaayegi (1968) and period tale Mohabbat Ke Dushman (1988).
