Much in demand as an actor and director in his native South Africa, Matshikiza was also a widely-read newspaper columnist. He starred in the television movie Mandela (1987) and had roles in features including Cry Freedom (1987), Dust Devil (1992), Hijack Stories (2000), Beyond Borders (2003) and Wah-Wah (2005).
