After early success with the sitcom A Kind of Living (1988-90), which starred Richard Griffiths and Frances De La Tour, Makin wrote a cult comedy about the antics of dysfunctional night security guards, Nightingales (1990-93). Other series he devised and wrote included Taking The Floor (1991) and Grown Ups (1997).
