An author whose fame transcended literary circles, film adaptations of Mailer’s work include The Naked And The Dead (1958) and Tough Guys Don’t Dance (1987), the latter of which he directed. He adapted his novel The Executioner’s Song for television in 1982, and proved a pugnacious presence in many documentaries.
