With his mutton chop whiskers, grumpy demeanour and frequent air of bewilderment at the state of the world, Magill was a much loved regular on Emmerdale Farm, later Emmerdale, (1972-1991). As Amos Brearly he ran The Woolpack pub, forming a cheery double act with Henry Wilks, played by Arthur Pentelow.
