A prolific performer frequently cast as authority figures, Launer's best known films include Jailhouse Rock (1957) - playing the judge who incarcerates Elvis - I Want to Live (1958), Marnie (1964) and Mommie Dearest (1981). On television he featured in such shows as Dragnet, Perry Mason, The Mod Squad, Gunsmoke and Bonanza.
