A handsome Hollywood leading man who emerged during the war years, Johnson was an engaging presence in light comedies and melodramas. His best work came in such films as A Guy Named Joe (1943), Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo (1944), The Caine Mutiny (1954) and The End of the Affair (1955).
