Starting off his directing career in the world of television commercials, Tokyo-born Ichikawa enjoyed breakout international success with Tony Takitani (2004). His other films, melancholy meditations on life and death, include Tsugumi (1990), Dying At A Hospital (1993), Tokyo Lullaby (1997), The Manga Apartment (1996) and Osaka Story (1999).
