An actress who worked in rep before the war, Hawkins had a small role in Laurence Olivier’s acclaimed screen adaptation of Hamlet (1948). By this time she had already fallen for the love of her life, actor Jack Hawkins, for whom she would retire from acting following their 1947 marriage.
