A key member of Hungarian cinema’s New Wave, Gaal came to international prominence with Cannes Jury Prize winner Magasiskola (1970), which he also wrote. More acclaim came with Dead Landscape (1971), Legato (1977) and the TV movie Orpheus & Eurydice (1985). He also worked, occasionally, as a cinematographer and documentarian.
