A presenter on The World Tonight in the mid 60s, Durden-Smith came into his own when he joined World In Action in 1968 as a producer-director. In the heady, politicised atmosphere of the time, he was drawn to the American civil rights movement, and thereafter spent time in glasnost-era Russia.
