A teenage chorus girl, Coonan had small roles in 42nd Street (1933) and Gold Diggers of 1933 (1933). She appeared in Dangerous Days (1933), and subsequently married its director William Wellman, a union that lasted more than 40 years. She later contributed to documentaries including Wild Bill: Hollywood Maverick (1995).
