An influential director in Hindi cinema, Chopra managed to make box office hits out of subjects dealing with social issues. These ranged from women’s rights to prostitution and the industrialisation of the country, with films including Naya Daur (1957), Sadhna (1958), Kanoon (1960), Gumrah (1963) and Insaf Ka Tarazu (1980).
