Best-known for the neo-realist drama Le Rendezvous des Quais (1955), Carpita had long thought his film lost after it was seized by authorities concerned at its depiction of striking dockworkers’ passive resistance to brutal police reprisals. Rediscovered in the 1980s, it was finally screened to great acclaim in 1990.
