A versatile screenwriter, Byrne had a foray into film when he adapted Adolf Hitler – My Part In His Downfall (1972). But television was his prime venue, most particularly with popular series All Creatures Great & Small (1977) and Heartbeat (1992). Other hits included Space 1999 (1975-76) and Doctor Who (1981-84).
