A BAFTA winner for his work on Cry Freedom (1987), Bates enjoyed a fruitful working relationship with Richard Attenborough on movies such as Gandhi (1982) Chaplin (1992) and Shadowlands (1993). Active from the 1960s, his other credits include Mona Lisa (1986), A Fish Called Wanda (1988) and Shirley Valentine (1989).
