A Danish director who began making films in 1951, Axel’s long career peaked when his 1987 drama Babette’s Feast was met with worldwide acclaim. The film was nominated for six BAFTAs, winning the award for Best Film not in the English Language, and also won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film.
