An influential producer who began his career as an actor, Argent was best known for his work on a number of BBC sitcoms, producing and directing episodes of The Liver Birds (1972-76) and Steptoe and Son (1974), producing the second series of Fawlty Towers (1979) and Spike Milligan’s Q5 (1980).
