An actor adept at a particularly English vein of villainy, Alexander enjoyed success within the ensemble of The League of Gentlemen (1960). He made countless television appearances in popular sitcoms and sketch series, taking key roles in The Forsyte Saga (1967) and most memorably as Charlie Hungerford in Bergerac (1981-1991).
