Tick Tock Toys - 2012 Ones To Watch Winner

Swallowtail, the team who created Tick Tock Toys accepted the BAFTA Ones to Watch Award at the 2012 BAFTA Video Games Awards. The award is presented annually in association with Dare to be Digital.

Over the summer of 2011, applications from over 70 universities worldwide were whittled down to just 15 teams to compete in Dare to be Digital. Hosted and run by the University of Abertay Dundee, Dare to be Digital brings in games industry professionals to hand-pick and mentor the teams, each of whom create their own game.

Dare To Be Digital Logo white backgrOn 14 August the next generation of computer games stars was unveiled as the three winning teams from Dare 2011 were announced; Digital Knights , Evolved Ape and Swallowtail .

The teams then competed for the exclusive BAFTA ‘Ones to Watch’ award which was presented to team Swallowtail for their game Tick Tock Toys at the GAME British Academy Video Games Awards 2012.

WINNER - SwallowtailSwallowtail Team [DARE 2012]

Swallowtail are Rosie Ball, Kristian Francis and Sophia George from the Norwich University College of the Arts and Mark Bamford and Callum Goold from Abertay University.

Their iPad game Tick Tock Toys was described by the judges to be ‘extremely well realised with obvious market strategy & a great game too!’

I came into the industry because I wanted to see more women working in games – and in turn creating more games for women. It is such an incredible privilege to win.

Tick Tock Toys
Play to Clear the Way!

Tick Tock Toys is a 3D puzzle/maze game for the iPad which takes place inside a cluttered toy box. The aim is to alter the position of the objects inside to clear a path for the clockwork robot to reach his goal. All of the objects are there to be played with; some will help solve the puzzle while others hinder the player. Tick Tock Toys offers cheerful visuals with fun and unique gameplay that anyone can pick up and play.

Digital KnightsDigital Knights Team [DARE 2012]

Digital Knights are Agne Gediminskaite, Roman Graebsch, Josep B Martinez and Petr Papez from the IT University of Copenhagen and Amr Din from Abertay University.

Their game Joust! is a fun Kinect title which the judges described to be ‘great looking and fun to play. [Joust] would make a great party game.’

We never, ever thought we’d be here. The team got together for the fun of it, so it’s just amazing to be nominated for a BAFTA

Knight. Lance. Steed. That’s all you need!

Joust! is a Kinect game for Xbox in which anyone can become a mighty knight! The game allows you to joust against your friends on split screen and compete in grand tournaments. A quirky medieval world awaits, creating a compelling gameplay experience for children and adults alike. Take control of your lance with one arm, while slapping the back of your horse with the other arm to speed up.

Evolved ApeEvolved Ape Team [DARE 2012]

Evolved Ape are Stuart Brown, Joe Hurst, Daniel Scholes and Mat Stevenson from the University of Central Lancashire and Malath Abbas from Liverpool Screen School.

Their game Dreamweaver developed for the PC was described by the judges to be ‘very engrossing with great characters’.

Dreamweaver
Harness your dreams. Puzzle and Pace!

Dreamweaver is a fun puzzle-platform adventure based in a vibrant 3D world. The game follows the adventures of a young boy as he explores a fantastical dream world accompanied by a creature companion, helping him solve puzzles by feeding it berries. Be careful though, the dream soon becomes a nightmare, as you learn that your new friend can bite! The player is kept on their toes as the game turns from calm puzzler to fast paced chase!
