Nik Powell Pays Tribute to Tony Scott

21 August 12

Nik Powell, Chair of the BAFTA Film Committee remembers Hollywood film director Tony Scott who tragically passed away on 20 August 2012.

BAFTA was saddened to learn of the death of celebrated filmmaker Tony Scott. Given the significant contribution he made to film during his career, he will be sadly missed. Our thoughts are with his family at this time.

The British born director Tony Scott (brother to Ridley Scott), famous for films including Top Gun and Man on Fire, was killed on Monday 20 August when he jumped from the Vincent Thomas Bridge in Los Angeles. Nik Powell spoke fondly of Scott in an interview with The Telegraph , describing his "wonderful ability to put [producers] in the driving seat."

a lovely character and human being...always charming and funny

Powell went on to talk of how the film industry will remember Scott; "First of all, as a lovely character and human being, as someone who was always charming and funny and driven on the one hand. On the other hand, they will remember him not just for the high octane action pictures but also for the two or three really cool independent movies that he did during his life."

Note: The Nick Powell is Chair of the BAFTA Film Committee & not Chair of BAFTA as stated in the above video.

BAFTA Deputy Chairman Tim Corrie also offered his condolences upon hearing the said news, saying; "He was a true pioneer. A great film-maker and a wonderful human being. He will be sorely missed by people all over the world.

"History will probably always link him with his brother which considering their lifelong partnership is right ... but Tony had his own style and will stand tall in the history of British film-makers."
