20 April 10

Joe Reed tells of his incredible experiences so far enjoying tips from industry experts and sitting in on recording sessions at Abbey Road Studios.

So, when I met fellow bursary recipient (and nominee) Jack at the start of Summer '09 and decided to collaborate, I can't say I predicted this is where we'd be today - I mean, I'm currently writing a blog to be hosted by the BBC and BAFTA...

I thought I'd be drowning in overdue schoolwork and little else, but no, I'm drowning in overdue schoolwork and getting nominated for the Screen-Skills Award, composing ideas for scores, sitting in on recording sessions at Abbey Road Studios and meeting inspirational, talented creatives whom I can now refer to as my peers. Weird.

Amidst the snowy chaos that brought in 2010, Tim (the other composer bursary recipient) and I took a trip to Abbey Road studios to sit in on the BBC Concert Orchestra recording Barnaby Taylor's score to a documentary on East Africa's Great Rift. This experience was incredible, and, as rumours of Abbey Road's sale circulated, poignant.

I can't wait to meet Tim again, and working with our mentor as he shows us the ropes of composing to moving image. I've always said yes to new opportunities, now let's get writing!
