Harriet Beaney: The Bright Lights of the BAFTAs

17 June 10

Harriet Beaney gives us her account of the big night when she attended the British Academy TV Craft Awards in London.

I met the other wonderful contestants and their guests before we trundled off to the BAFTAs together. My older brother was my guest, while my parents wandered around Hyde Park for the evening.

On arriving at the ceremony, we had a photo shoot, just after Stephen Mangan (Guy Secretan from Green Wing) had his. I think he saw my jaw drop as he walked past.

I soon found myself at the awards, underneath the colossal chandeliers of the Main Ballroom. The awards were fun, with the likes of Lenny Henry, James May and Omid Djalili entertaining us, until my face popped up on the screen again in all its horrendous glory. At least that’s probably the last time I have to see it so big.

Sam won the award (deservingly, naturally, and congratulations to him!) and went up to get his prize on the stage.

I left early because I had an AS French exam at 9 am the next morning. I can’t say the exam went fantastically smoothly, but, come on, going to the BAFTAs beats passing French any day!
