Can you imagine being nominated to receive an award at a BAFTA ceremony before your career has even begun? Follow updates from four young creatives who are experiencing just that.

Joe Reed, Jack Crocker, Sam Shetabi and Harriet Beaney have all dreamed of pursuing careers in the television industry. Having been nominated for a BBC Blast and BAFTA Screen-Skills Award, they’re now making giant leaps in the right direction.

The talented foursome were selected from a group of eight Screen-Skills bursary winners back in March 2010 and are now receiving personal mentoring from industry experts.

Blast Portraits Sam

Sam Shetabi: Director of Photography
For as long as I can remember, I've wanted to work in telly and it's been the only career path I've ever even considered. I've gone through phases of what I want to do when I graduate, but I see myself working in production roles, hopefully one day climbing the ladder to Exec Producer and maybe even Channel Controller when I'm old and grey! I've only had some baby-steps experience in the industry so far, from the odd day of running here and there for music videos to a summer job at a small indie. The bulk of the work I've produced has been at school and at university which has developed my camera, editing and production skills gradually over the last 5 or so years, but I still feel like I have a lot to learn before I make it.

Blast Portraits Harriet

Harriet Beaney: Writer
I’m Harriet, 16, and I won the screenwriting category for my film about a toy goblin. I spend a lot my time outside school reading books, writing and watching films, acting and trying to play the piano. Oh, and I like sitting in Starbucks with my friends and drinking Frappuccinos. I love Bolivia, Green Wing, Franz Ferdinand and Shakespeare. I hate Physics homework and Tutti Frutti flavour. When I’m older, I’d like to write feature films and TV series for a living and travel around the world.

Jack Crocker

Jack Crocker: Editor
I’m 18, from Bath, love sports, books and arts. I’ve wanted to be a filmmaker since I was 6. I’ve been volunteering at a young people’s film club since 2006 (it’s helped me immensely!) I was on Blast’s steering panel from age 14-16 and at 15 got funding from The UK Film Council to start a school film club. By 16 I was on a traineeship with BBC Bristol, at 17 I got a full-scholarship to a private school so knuckled down but still helped organise the first Encounters Youth Film Festival and finished my first film: From Choice To Change (I’ve worked on many others!). I’ve almost done my final exams, and now can’t wait to make the most of the amazing opportunity BBC Blast and BAFTA have given me!

Joe Reed

Joe Reed: Composer
Hi! Joe here, 18 year old composer from the Southwest currently studying for a BTEC in Music. Composing on From Choice To Change was the first time I had composed for the moving image and it was the most creative and fun time I’ve ever had with composition, realising the power of music when written for a scene. My ideal job would be composing for an independent film: working with the director from very early on so all the elements of the film can be shown in my score.
