Advice and Inspiration - Directors

Directing film or TV can be a lonely and sometimes frustrating experience. Here BAFTA members – some of the finest Directors working today – share what they’ve learned along the way.

The Messages:

Jonathan Newman – Director/Writer

Success is obtainable by everyone. I think of it as a magic triangle: Talent + luck + (most importantly) the continued application of 'action' in the face of adversity, obstacles and rejections will eventually win over.

Paul Balmer – Director

The broadcaster pulled the plugs, there was no money. My artist was 88 and in failing health but he wanted to tell his remarkable story. In the end, my bank manager drove the crew to Paris. We shot the film. The film, Stephane Grappelli a Life In The Jazz Century, was BAFTA nominated. NEVER GIVE UP! Some stories MUST be told!

Bert & Bertie - Writers/Directors

Ladies, it's hard, hard work, but don't forget to have fun. Well behaved women seldom make film history!

You need a vision of where you are going. Where you see yourself in several years time?

Ray Kilby – Director/Writer

Persistence is the key. When you feel at your lowest, and all the networking and job interviews and leads are drying up, remember that everyone who is now a success in this industry was where you are now. So, just keep going.

There is no one way in. The door may seem small, but there are several of them, so keep knocking! And once you are through that door, then do your best, learn to listen and make sure you stay on good terms with as many people as you can.

Then, when you get your BAFTA, remember to look back and open a few doors for those urgent and needy knocks from others.

Lee Phillips – Documentary Filmmaker

Success is all about the three Ts: Talent, Tenacity and Timing.

Michael Hines – Director

Be courteous to everyone you work with. They want to help you get the best, so leave the pride at home but keep the dignity. Too many egos and not enough talent do not make good films.

Albert Barber – Director

You need a vision of where you are going. Where you see yourself in several years time? Write yourself a one paragraph CV, narrow down your option and decide where to ultimately concentrate your efforts.

Once you begin, your enjoyment at what you are doing is a good indicator to whether you are best suited to that particular job.

Finally, luck plays an important part in what is an ever increasing competitive environment. You will have to put up with a great deal of heartache and soul searching and rejection.
