Art work by Dave Gibbons for the 1994 video game 'Beneath a Steel Sky' Revolution Software

Collaborations: Charles Cecil & Dave Gibbons

16 March 10

Video game producer Charles Cecil and Watchmen comic book artist Dave Gibbons first worked together on 1994's adventure game Beneath A Steel Sky, which they recently revamped for the iPhone.

"Dave hand drew the background for Beneath A Steel Sky, worked on character design and contributed to the story. We really enjoyed working together and have continued to do so since. To thrash ideas out, Dave and I tend to meet for a nice dinner with plenty of wine or else go to the pub in Harpenden, which is close to where he has his office. Dave isn't actually much of a gamer. His son Daniel is, however. Scarily, Daniel was very young when we first started working together and is now a doctor, having left university. He helped us Beta Test Steel Sky and provided very valuable feedback."

"When Charles set up his own company, Revolution, he asked me to work with them. He’d seen what I'd done with building worlds and characters in Watchmen and thought that skill was transferable to the kind of computer games that he was interested in. I discovered very early on that Charles is a great collaborator. It was very easy to put our egos out of the way. These days I do artwork on screen, email things back and forth and chat to Charles on Skype. Back then, working together consisted of phone calls, things sent by fax – the wonderful new technology of the day! It was less ‘good lunches with lots of wine’ and more ‘bacon sandwiches from the greasy spoon under their office’!"
