Blog 01: Winners Announced

All that writing certainly paid offI wrote the pilot for 'My American Dream' specifically for this initiative, and only had 3 days to do so, so getting through each stage of the competition was surprising.

I have a history of doing this - I wrote my entire university dissertation the day before hand-in and somehow managed a 2.1. I don't recommend it, as nervous breakdowns at 4am will inevitably occur, but I seem to work best under pressure and when screwing up is not an option.

My script pokes fun at the American dream, and the ways people measure success in their lives. There's constant pressure on everyone to accomplish so much (at work, in love, financially, even biologically), and I tend to find humour where there's hardship, so this seemed like a good place to start. I really enjoyed writing it, but you never know if anyone else is going to get it, or find it funny. The written report I received as feedback was positive, and I was very touched by it.

The final round interviews are a bit of a blur. My neighbourhood was looted the night before (during the London riots), and I barely managed a couple of hours' sleep, lying in bed fully dressed and ready to do a runner in case they broke into my flat - which of course they didn't - my imagination ran a bit wild on that one.

Thankfully, Farah, Kevin and Alex are very easy to talk to and they quickly put me at ease. I've wanted to be a screenwriter for as long as I can remember, so to say that this is a great opportunity would be an understatement.
