Film Not in the English Language Nominees Press Release

7 January 2009

The nominations for the Film Not in the English Language Award, to be presented at the Orange British Academy Film Awards in 2009, have been announced.

The nominations for the Film Not in the English Language Award:

The Baader Meinhof Complex
Gomorrah
I’ve Loved You So Long
Persepolis
Waltz with Bashir

Chapter voting was introduced for this Award 2007/08. A Chapter is comprised of Academy voting members with expertise in a specific area of the film industry.

The Film Not in the English Language Chapter nominees are announced today ahead of the announcement of the nominations in other categories, which will take place later this month. This early announcement of the nominations allows the members a longer period to view the five films in contention and gives a greater profile to this year’s foreign language films. The membership at large will vote to decide the winner, to be announced at the Orange British Academy Film Awards on Sunday 8 February 2009.

Finola Dwyer, Chair of BAFTA’s Film Committee, said "We are delighted to announce the contenders for this award today. This voting chapter has doubled in size since last year, reflecting the huge enthusiasm for world cinema amongst the BAFTA members".

Nominations for this year’s Orange Rising Star Award will be announced on 8 January and all other nominations for the Orange British Academy Film Awards in 2009 will be announced on 15 January. The winners will be announced during the Film Awards ceremony on Sunday 8 February at the Royal Opera House in London’s Covent Garden.
