OUTSTANDING BRITISH FILM

GRAVITY -
Gravity is the story of an astronaut’s struggle for survival when her shuttle is destroyed by space debris.
Alfonso Cuarón won the Film Not in the English Language category for Pan’s Labyrinth in 2007, and the Feature Film category at the 2004 Children’s Awards for Harry Potter & the Prisoner of Azkaban in 2004. He was also nominated for Outstanding British Film for Harry Potter, and for Film Not in the English Language and Original Screenplay for And Your Mother Too in 2003.
Heyman produced the Harry Potter films, for which he was nominated twice in this category and six times in the feature category at the British Academy Children’s Awards (winning twice). He was also nominated for a British Academy Television Award for producing the David Hare drama Page 8.
Jonás Cuarón is Alfonso’s son. His other credits include writing, directing and producing Anangaaq and The Year of the Nail.
Gravity is also nominated for Best Film. Alfonso Cuaron is also nominated for Original Screenplay, Editing, Director and Best Film.

MANDELA: LONG WALK TO FREEDOM -
A biopic telling the story of Nelson Mandela’s journey from revolutionary to President of South Africa.
Chadwick won the Drama Serial category at the 2006 British Academy Television Awards for the BBC’s adaptation of Bleak House, for which he was also nominated in the Director Category at the Television Craft Awards. He was also nominated at the Television Awards for Stolen in 2012, and at the British Academy Children’s Awards for Children’s Ward in 1999.
Singh has produced more than 50 films, mainly in his native South Africa.
Thompson has won the Single Drama category at the British Academy Television Awards twice (in 1986 and 1994), and was nominated in the Mini Series category for The Crimson Petal & The White in 2012.
Nicholson was nominated in this category for Les Miserables last year, and has been nominated twice in the Screenplay categories, for Shadowlands in 1994 and Gladiator in 2001.

PHILOMENA -
The true story of a woman who set out to find the son she was forced to give up for adoption, aided by investigative journalist Martin Sixsmith (played by Coogan in the film).
Frears and Seaward have been nominated in this category twice before, for Dirty Pretty Things and The Queen. Seaward also won Best Film as the producer of the Queen, and Frears was nominated in the Director category; he was also nominated in the Director category for Dangerous Liasons in 1990. He also has a number of nominations for British Academy Television Awards, including two wins for The Deal in 2004 and Going Gently in 1982. He was also presented with a Special Award for Creative Contribution to Television at the 1994 Television Awards.
Coogan has a number of Television Award nominations (and three wins) for his character Alan Partridge, and also won for his performance in The Trip in 2011. He was nominated for Outstanding Debut at the Film Awards for writing The Parole Officer, in which he also starred; his other film roles include 24 Hour Party People, Around the World in 80 Days, Night at the Museum, Coffee & Cigarettes, A Cock & Bull Story and this year’s Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa.
Tana’s other credits include Coriolanus, The Duchess and The Invisible Woman (nominated this yaer for Costume Design).
Pope is a producer and writer, and is currently Head of Factual Drama at ITV; he won a British Academy Television Award for producing See No Evil: The Moors Murders, and has been nominated on 6 other occasions in drama categories as a writer and/or producer. His other film credits include Pierrepoint: The Last Hangman.
Philomena is also nominated for Best Film. Coogan and Pope are also nominated for Adapted Screenplay.

RUSH -
The true story of the rivalry between Formula 1 drivers James Hunt and Niki Lauda.
Howard has twice been nominated for both Best Film and Director, in 2002 for A Beautiful Mind, and in 2009 for Frost/Nixon. He was also nominated in the Feature category at the 2001 British Academy Children’s Awards for The Grinch. His other directing credits include The Da Vinci Code, Apollo 13, Cocoon and Splash; before becoming a director, he was an actor, most notably in the sitcom, Happy Days.
Eaton has been nominated on this occasion three times previously, for A Cock & Bull Story, Wonderland and In This World, for which he was also won Film Not in the English Language. He has also been nominated for five British Academy Television Awards including a win in 2010 for the Channel 4 drama The Unloved.
Morgan won this category and Adapted Screenplay for The Last King of Scotland in 2007; in the same year he was nominated in this category and Original Screenplay for The Queen. He also won a British Television Craft Award for Longford in 2007, for he was also nominated for Single Drama at the Television Awards; he won Single Drama for The Deal in 2004.

SAVING MR. BANKS -
The true story of the author P L Travers’ visit to Los Angeles to negotiate the screen rights to Mary Poppins with Walt Disney.
Hancock previously wrote and directed The Blind Side and the Alomo, and wrote the screenplay for Snow White and the Huntsman.
Owen won this category and was nominated for Best Film in 1999 for Elizabeth. She has also been nominated for British Academy Television Awards for Small Island and Smashie & Nicey.
Collie produced a documentary about P L Travers in 2002, and began developing the screenplay with Smith shortly afterwards. Collie’s other credits include a series of Australian television movies starring Guy Pearce as the detective Peter Temple; Smith’s include My Brother Jack and Peaches.
This is Marcel’s first produced feature screenplay and she is also nominated in the Outstanding Debut category. She previously created the US sci-fi drama Terra Nova, and has earlier credits as an actress.
Steuer’s other producer credits include The Chronicles of Narnia films, Oz The Great and Powerful, and The Shape of Things; he has earlier credits as Props Master on films including Driving Miss Daisy and Sid & Nancy.

THE SELFISH GIANT -
A modern-day adaptation of the Oscar Wilde story of the same name, about two boys who work for a scrap merchant.

In a desolate part of England a game of football comes to a standstill as the ball mysteriously goes missing. When a lonely stranger returns it the players have to decide whether or not to let him join in their game.
Aschim and Taylor are both designers, directors and animators, and both previously worked on Sylvain Chomet’s Oscar nominated film, The Illusionist.
Nicolaus is a London-based producer and co-founder of MAGNITUDE - a collective devoted to storytelling through various animation formats.

A surreal trip through the subconscious of a stifled musician as he struggles to sing.
Henderson won this award last year for his film The Making of Longbird.

SLEEPING WITH THE FISHES -
Sonja lives a lonely life as a fishmonger, more at ease with her fish than her customers, until one day a delivery man turns up who looks like a rainbow trout.

ISLAND QUEEN -
Mim has lived her whole life on a little island with her best mate Danny. Her life is idyllic but going nowhere and she fears she’s left it too late to grow up. She makes the impetuous decision to have a baby – surely a one-way ticket to adulthood?
Mallaby's other credits include the short Battlecock! which premiered at the London Film Festival in 2013.

ORBIT EVER AFTER -
Life in space isn’t easy. And living in orbit, indefinitely, with only your close family for company is even worse. A science fiction romance where two star - crossed lovers overcome all probabilities and sacrifice all they have in order to spend one perfect moment together.
Rowles and Stone previously collaborated on the short Skyborn, their graduation film from the National Film and Television School. Stone won a BAFTA Scotland Award for his animation, The World According To. Chan was formerly Head of Development at Vertigo Films.

A prisoner makes a fantastical discovery when thrown into a cell with a terse and unsettling inmate; but in an audacious endeavour to escape his captors, he unearths a malevolent trick and the secrets of the cell are fully revealed.

SEA VIEW -
Jess and Jason meet at the bus station in a seaside town, seeing each other in daylight for the first time.
What at first seemed exciting, forbidden, and divinely careless, soon threatens to be a regretful experience for both.
Jane is a self-taught filmmaker from North Yorkshire. Duffield's other credits include the feature film Donkeys, for which she won a BAFTA Scotland Award.

THE ARMSTRONG LIE -
In 2009 director Alex Gibney set out to do a documentary film on cyclist Lance Armstrong's comeback year after a four-year retirement from the sport. Following a doping investigation that led to his lifetime ban from competition and the stripping of his seven Tour De France titles, Armstrong went back to Gibney to set the record straight about his career.
Gibney’s previous films include Park Avenue, Mea Maxima Culpa, Freakonomics and Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room. He is also nominated this year for We Steal Secrets.

Taylor is the creator and head of the New Zealand based prop and special effects company Weta Workshop. He was knighted in 2010. He has been nominated across a range of categories for his work on The Lord of the Rings trilogy, including wins for Make Up & Hair and Special Visual Effects on Fellowship of the Ring, and Costume Design for The Two Towers; he also won the Special Visual Effects category for King Kong.
