BAFTA New York co-sponsors “Focus on UK Film” at Hamptons International Film Festival

15 October 13

BAFTA New York was once again a major presence at the Hamptons International Film Festival. This annual autumn event in eastern Long Island, New York has the perfect balance of star/ filmmaker wattage and small town appeal.

A highlight each year at the Hamptons International Film Festival is the BAFTA New York co-sponsored “Focus on UK Film” showcase of films, discussions and tributes. This year’s films were of a wide variety and superb caliber: Ralph Fiennes’ “The Invisible Woman”, Stephen Frears’ “Philomena” starring Dame Judy Dench and the Emma Thompson-scripted “Effie Gray” among them. Helena Bonham Carter was the focus of an “In Conversation with” and was simply a delight. She had the audience from the very start and was funny, insightful and so lovely to her young fans. (Starring in Harry Potter films gives you loads of “young fans”!)

The centerpiece of the “Focus on UK Film” was the tribute to Working Title Films . Co-chairs Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner were there to accept the Golden Starfish Award for Lifetime Achievement and writer/directors Richard Curtis (Love Actually, Four Weddings and a Funeral) and Edgar Wright (The World’s End, Shaun of the Dead) came to regale and honor them. The whole event was co-produced by BAFTA NY board members Harlene Freezer and Luke Parker Bowles to wonderful effect.

Each year “Focus on UK Film” demonstrates the scope of excellent talent and content coming out of the UK and from the audience attendance and response, there is a demand and appreciation for this kind of programming. It confirms the need for our organization here in New York to bridge this gap and bring this programming and talent to our shores for both our members and wider audiences. It is always a proud moment to see our logo as co-presenters of this prestigious showcase each year at the Hamptons International Film Festival. Please look out next year for member discounts to screenings and come and see for yourself.
