On April 14th, 2016 BAFTA New York welcomed members and their guests to a masterclass with film and television producer John Smithson at the Elinor Bunin Munroe Film Center.
John Smithson is co-founder and creative director of Arrow Media, one of the UK's fastest growing independent production companies. Previously he was chief executive of Darlow SmithsonProductions, a company he created and evolved into one of the biggest and most admired producers in global non-fiction TV. He has won or been nominated for more than 50 Awards across film and television. In 2011 he was an Oscar® nominee for Best Motion Picture of the Year for Danny Boyle's 127 HOURS. The film was nominated for 9 BAFTAs including Outstanding British Film. He also produced the renowned theatrical documentary TOUCHING THE VOID , which won the BAFTA for Outstanding British Film and broke box-office records. He recently jointly produced the Australia/UK feature documentary SHERPA, which won the Best Documentary Award at the London Film Festival and was nominated for Best Documentary in the BAFTA Film Awards. Smithson has been responsible for hundreds of hours of iconic television - including award-winning docs such as THE BECKONING SILENCE, DEEP WATER, FALLING MAN and THRILLA IN MANILLA.
