On Wednesday, February 8th, BAFTA New York hosted an event for its Media Studies scholars and many of their fellow students at Retro Report. There were over 70 graduate film and television students in attendance with representatives from Feirstein Graduate School of Cinema at Brooklyn College, Brooklyn College's TV & Radio Department, CCNY’s Film Program and NYU Tisch School of the Arts.
The BAFTA New York Outreach Committee oversees the scholarship initiative. “We feel it is very important that we not only help the scholars financially but also act as a bridge to the 'Real World' and help them navigate the industry,” said Linda Kahn, Chair of the Outreach Committee. “We connect each scholar to a mentor and this event is the next step in their career journey.”
BAFTA New York Board and Scholarship Selection Member Doug Schwalbe (DreamWorks Animation) was joined by BAFTA New York Board Member Celine Rattray (Maven Pictures) and BAFTA Member Susan Bishop (Bishop Partners) for a conversation on the major issues students might face after graduation. The session was moderated by BAFTA New York Board Member Linda Kahn (Linda Kahn Media LLC).
Topics covered included: how to prepare your resume for specific areas (production, corporate); interview techniques; how and when to prepare and follow up on a meeting; review of different types of available employment; setting realistic goals; opportunities in New York vs. Los Angeles. The panel also discussed the “do’s and don’ts” of Social Media and The Elevator Pitch.
