Tom Hooper - Red Carpet Interview, EE British Academy Film Awards in 2016

Red Carpet Interview with Tom Hooper

Interviewer: Zoe Ball.

Q.      Tom Hooper, as I live and breathe.  Congratulations for an incredible movie, and to your stars who are nominated tonight.  How proud are you of them?

A.      I'm so proud to have both best actor and best actress for The Danish Girl, Alicia and Eddie. It couldn't happen to a nicer couple of people and they brought to life the love story in the film in such a wonderful way.  I'm so pleased that everybody is responding to it, including the BAFTA voters.

Q.      Well said.  It's such a beautiful story. How did you find the story?  Alicia was saying that she couldn't believe she'd never heard about
Lili and Gerda before?

A.      I came across this eight years ago, my wonderful casting director Nina Gold said, “I know of one great unmade script”.  I read it, I fell
for this extraordinary love story, this incredibly pioneering couple. I couldn't believe I'd never heard of Lili, the first or among the first gender confirmation surgeries in the world. So brave, and it made me wonder whether the world over the decades had pushed her story aside because there have been decades of prejudice around these kind of trans stories.  So the fact that I've helped to bring it out into the light in this world, in this way and we're on the red carpet talking about this wonderful woman, Lili Elbe almost 100 years ago is amazing.

Q.      Good luck with the film tonight.  What's your next project?  We're excited to hear?

A.      I would love to reveal that in the intimacy of talking to you on the red carpet but I can't.

Q.      Tell me later in the bar.  Lovely to talk to you.
