Spotlight - Winner acceptance speech, Original Screenplay, EE British Academy Film Awards in 2016

14 February 2016

Winners Acceptance Speech by Tom McCarthy & Josh Finger for Original Screenplay

TOM McCARTHY:  Thank you very much, BAFTA.  I'm Tom McCarthy, the co-writer and director of Spotlight.  My dear friend and compatriot, Josh Singer, could not be here; he's at home with his pregnant wife, but I have to pay him the most respect.  He is just a brilliant mind and has an insatiable sort of soul and curiosity about him that really drove me through this project.  So Josh, I share this with you.

It's a very special might for me too because I won my first BAFTA for The Station Agent and they never gave me the plaque and to this day no one really believes it's my BAFTA, so I'm hoping I get a two-for-one when I go back there and correct that.

So many people to thank.  The movie is only as good as the script; the script is only as good as all the collaborators.
We will start with E1, our partners here in Europe, Open Road, Participant Media, Anonymous Content, our wonderful producers who are here tonight: Nicole Rocklin, Blythe Faust, Michael Sugar and Steve Golin. Michael Biederman, our wonderful line producer, who made it happen.  My entire creative team and crews in Boston and Toronto.  I share this most certainly with them.

Finally the real heroes: the reporters who told told this story, who broke this story, and the editors at the Boston Globe and then finally the courageous survivors who came forward, shared their stories with us, with the world, continue to do that now, continue to put pressure for change.  I give a shout out to Peter Saunders, a UK citizen and survivor, and the great work he's doing right now in this country and at the Vatican.  You are an inspiration to us all, quite truly.  I think finally to my wonderful Valentine, Wendy, who is here tonight.  Baby, thank you.  I share this with you.  Thank you, it's tremendous privilege, BAFTA.
