Red Carpet Interview with Saoirse Ronan

Interviewer: Zoe Ball

Q.      Congratulations on your nomination for Brooklyn. I read that you actually read the book, Brooklyn, when youwere 16 years old?

A.      Yeah, when I was about 16 I had read it, just for pleasure, because Colm is such a popular author everywhere, but especially in Ireland.  I think it was my Irish agent Derek actually that gave it to me.  I read it and then years later the script had kind of been floating around for a while and I was the right age for it.

Q.      I also read that you'd just moved away from home around the time you were filming it, so obviously you could sympathise, empathise with her character?

A.      I totally could. That's what made it so emotional, it was really strange that there was no sort of separation when it came to her sort of journey compared to mine. I moved over here, I had moved to London and I had been here for about six months and was very homesick. You know, even though it's similar to home, it's not you know, your roots and you're sort of getting used to establishing yourself in a new city.  I was going through all of that while I was making the film.

Q.      So that came through probably and gave a better performance?

A.      Totally.

Q.      How happy are you that it's been embraced the world over?  I know it's so cold.

A.      I know it's so cold.  I'm so happy to be back in London.

Q.      Even though it's freezing.  How happy are you though that the film has been embraced like that?

A.      It has honestly been one of the most wonderful experiences I've had.  When you don't expect that to happen and you get this outpouring of love and people telling you, this is my parents' story, this is my story, this is what my Grandad went through when he moved away.

Q.      I'm going to let you go. Your coat awaits.  And good luck with the Sea Guard.  Good luck tonight.  Thanks for talking to us.
